Right around Memorial Day weekend, thousands of second home owners make the drive down Route 1 or across Route 404 to unlock the door and face whatever winter left behind. Musty furniture, a shed full of junk, half finished projects. Sound familiar?
Whether your vacation home is in Rehoboth Beach, Lewes, Bethany Beach, Dewey Beach, Fenwick Island, or one of the inland towns like Milton, Georgetown, or Millsboro, the story is usually the same: you’ve got one or two weekends to get the place guest-ready, and there’s way more junk than a standard SUV can handle.
That’s where a roll off dumpster earns its keep.
What Beach House Owners Find When They Open Up for the Season
If you’ve owned a second home on the Delaware coast for more than a few years, you’re likely dealing with:
- Furniture past its prime. Salt air, humidity, and closed-up rooms do a number on upholstery, mattresses, and particleboard furniture. If it smells musty or the cushions are mildewed, it’s time.
- Leftover renovation debris. Old flooring, drywall scraps, cabinet doors, trim pieces. All the remnants of last year’s remodel that got shoved into the garage “for now.”
- Storm and water damage. Coastal Delaware gets nor’easters and heavy storms every winter. Damaged siding, broken deck boards, and waterlogged materials pile up fast.
- The shed and garage cleanout you’ve been avoiding. Years of beach chairs, boogie boards, coolers, rusted grills, and random accumulation.
- Appliance swaps. Upgrading the fridge, washer, or HVAC unit before renters arrive? The old ones need to go somewhere.
None of this fits in a few trash bags. And your regular trash service (if you even have one running at the property year-round) isn’t going to take a moldy couch and a pile of old decking.
Why a Dumpster Beats the "Multiple Trips" Approach
A lot of beach house owners try to haul stuff to the transfer station themselves. In theory, it works. In practice, here’s what actually happens: you spend half your limited weekend time driving back and forth to the Delaware Solid Waste Authority (DSWA) facility, paying per-load fees, and still don’t finish because your truck bed only holds so much.
With a roll off container on your driveway, you just throw things in as you go. Work at your own pace. When you’re done, call us and we haul it away. No dump runs, no loading and unloading multiple times.
For most beach house cleanouts, a 20-yard or 30-yard dumpster does the job. If you’re just clearing out a shed and some furniture, the 20-yard is plenty. If there’s renovation debris in the mix or you’re doing a full-property purge, go with the 30. Not sure? Our instant quote tool and visual size guide can help you figure it out in about 30 seconds.

A Few Things to Know Before You Toss Everything In
Roll off dumpsters can handle a lot, but there are some restrictions – most of which are set by DSWA, H.O.A.s, or DOT regulations, not by us. Here’s what Sussex County beach house owners should keep in mind:
What CAN go in your dumpster
General household junk, furniture, appliances (with some exceptions), lumber, drywall, flooring, carpet, roofing shingles, yard debris, and construction materials.
What CANNOT go in your dumpster
Paint, chemicals, propane tanks, pool chemicals, tires, batteries, biohazards, and other hazardous materials. Beach houses tend to accumulate a few of these; especially propane tanks from grills and leftover pool or hot tub chemicals. Those need to go to a DSWA drop-off site separately.
Be Aware of Deadlines
Many beach towns and communities have rules or bylaws regarding rental dumpster placement during the tourist season. Be sure to check in with your H.O.A. and local zoning offices to find out exactly when the cutoff is to avoid fines and headaches.
Timing Matters: Book Before the Rush
The one thing about beach season prep in Sussex County: everyone does it at the same time. Late April through early June is our busiest window for this part of the service area. We can usually get a dumpster to you next-day, but if you already know your ideal weekend, booking a week or two ahead guarantees you get the size you want, when you want it.
This is especially true if you’re a property manager handling multiple rentals, or a contractor lined up for pre-season renovation work across several homes. We can coordinate multiple drops and pickups, and even offer a dedicated driver – just let us know your schedule.
